Rhode Island Tourism and Attractions

Rhode Island tourism thrives despite the state’s small size. Rhode Island attractions include spectacular ocean views, sandy beaches, towns humming with culture, and a colorful social history keep people coming back for more.

Whether the purpose of your vacation is to relax, take in the sights, or learn more about history and culture, Rhode Island is the perfect place for you and your entire family.

Providence

As the capital of Rhode Island, Providence is always a popular place to visit. The city has been largely renovated since the early 1990s when a number of rivers that had long been hidden beneath the city were uncovered.

These were used to create a large waterfront park where frequent celebrations are hosted. Providence is also home to Brown University, which introduces many cultural and artistic elements to the city.

There are also culinary and design schools as well. One of the favorite destinations in Providence is the Roger Williams Park. Here you will find a zoo, old casino building, and a large carousel.

This park is very reminiscent of the Victorian era and also houses the Museum of Natural History and Planetarium.

If shopping appeals to you, then you will definitely want to check out the Providence Place Mall and The Arcade, located between Weybosset and Westminster streets.

Block Island

Another prime Rhode Island tourism attraction is Block Island, just off the shore of Block Island Sound.

It is a short ferry ride from Point Judith. Mopeds or bicycles are available to rent on the island to make exploration easier. Here you can see true, unmarred New England beauty, completely free of commercialism.

The bluffs, rolling hills, and small ponds make the terrain very unique. There are lots of hiking trails for your convenience. There are also two lighthouses on the island that you will definitely want to visit.

Guilded Newport

The city of Newport is accountable for a large portion of Rhode Island tourism each year.

It is very rich in history and culture. That is clearly evidenced by the huge turnout each year for its legendary folk, jazz, and classical festivals.

There are also many festivals hosted throughout the year.

Newport is quite notorious for its magnificent architecture that is from America’s Gilded Age. The mansions and gardens are quite impressive, many of which are open to the public.

Newport is also home to the world’s largest yacht regatta. There are many cruises available to the public as well. The charming shops and restaurants in Newport will make it hard for you to ever leave.

Narragansett Bay

On the north side of Rhode Island Sound is the stunning Narragansett Bay.

This is New England’s largest estuary.

There are over 30 islands in the Bay and numerous bridges built over various parts of the Narragansett.

There are many rivers that feed into the Bay which in turn empties into Block Island Sound. Sailing, kayaking, boating, fishing, and swimming are great ways to explore the Bay. Seal watching is another popular activity.

If you don’t want to do all the work, then join a guided cruise and just relax and enjoy the scenery and marine life around you.

Rhode Island may be small, but as they often say, “Great things come in small packages.” There is no shortage of things to do here. Consider Rhode Island for your next vacation. We look forward to your visit!
