Nantucket Island.
A Step Back in Time

We always look forward to our trips to Nantucket Island. Getting away from everyday life, on a small island, it's just so very nice.

There are many things to do in Nantucket, other than laying on the beach, but quite honestly, we go there simply to walk the beaches, eat, shop, and relax. It feels like a world away while we're here, even though it's only 25 miles from the coast of Cape Cod.

Nantucket isn't very big, approximately 14 miles long by 3.5 miles wide. Originally a booming whaling port, Nantucket has changed very little architecturally since the 17th century, as seaside cottages and old-fashioned lamps still line its cobblestone streets.

I don't recommend bringing your car if you can avoid it.

First of all it costs quite a bit to ferry it over there, plus it helps to keep the island from looking like a parking lot. And it would severely take away from the beauty of this island, seeing huge SUV's jamming up the roads.

To get around Nantucket, there are several options. There's seasonal public shuttles, with a fare of a dollar or two, a year round taxi service and you could rent a bicycle or a scooter, or even a small car.

But really it's worth the couple dollars to take the shuttle if this is your first trip to Nantucket Island.

You can just sit back and let someone else do the driving, while you breath in the scenery, ahh, that's my idea of relaxation.

Just thinking about our little get away, puts me in a better frame of mind.

One of my favorite things to do on Nantucket Island is rent a scooter and cruise to each corner of the island. It's compact and what traffic there is, you can usually get around it. Affordable Rentals had the best rates for scooter rentals, plus they are nice to deal with.

Places to stay are plentiful, however, it is not cheap. There are no major hotel chains here, but there are service hotels, lots of bed and breakfasts, and cottages and homes to rent.

Our favorite place to stay is The Veranda House. Great rooms, excellent location, close to the beaches, and the shops downtown, plus a nice view of the ocean on the upper levels.

Getting to Nantucket Island is easy. There are ferries that run year round, or if you are want to just get to Nantucket as fast as you can, then there are several airlines that leave Hyannis, that can get you there in about 15 minutes.

One year we took a ferry over, and then flew back. However, I do prefer the ferry when time is not an issue.

Leaving Nantucket is hard for me, I do love it there so much, leaving only reminds me that I need to get back to the real world...but that's life.
