Maine Tourist Attractions and Sightseeing

Maine tourist attractions vary depending on the season, and Maine tourism relies heavily on these seasonal activities.

In autumn, people from around the world come to see the magnificent foliage. In the winter, snowmobiling, skiing, skating, snowboarding, and ice-fishing are popular activities.

Spring and summer are for sailing, kayaking, fishing, canoeing, white-water rafting, sunbathing and swimming.

All year round there are plenty of historic sights to see as well as natural wildlife.

Of course no mention of Maine would be complete without the fact that some of the world’s best seafood is found right here as well!

Acadia National Park

The Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island are a very popular Maine tourist attractions, hosting more than 4 million tourists each year. This area, known as Bar Harbor, is also referred to as Downeast Maine.

Whale watching and puffin watching are popular activities here.

Acadia is known for Mount Cadillac. This is where each sunrise in the United States can first be seen,

In keeping with the natural beauty of the lakes, mountains, and cliffs of Acadia, Bar Harbor has also taken that theme with a family nature camp, zoo, oceanarium, and a museum dedicated to the Wabenaki Indians that used to live here.

Rock climbing, sailing, and hiking are also popular activities.

Old Orchard Beach

Old Orchard Beach is a seven-mile beach that has become so popular that now a resort town centers around it. The name comes from the orchards and grapevines of Thomas Rogers’ plantation here in 1657.

Looking at this area today, you would never guess that it has been destroyed by fire seven times in the past century! After each devastation the people have revitalized the town making it better each time.

Besides sunbathing, you should definitely take a walk on the landmark pier, take in a concert at the Pier Casino, visit the amusement park, relax in Ocean Park, and take in the wildlife at Maine Game Preserve.

Old Orchard is also popular with train buffs as railroads play a big part in transportation in and out of this area.

Portland

Portland is Maine’s largest city and a big part of Maine tourist attractions.

The Portland Observatory offers fantastic views of the city. The public market is a wonderful place to buy the freshest seafood anywhere.

There are many historic houses and churches available to the public. With an art museum and school of art, you can be sure that there are many art galleries throughout the city as well.

There is also a symphony, theater and dance for the music lover.

There are museums for children, African tribal art, railroads, and even one that outlays the city’s history of fire devastation.

There are plenty of malls, shops, and outlets for the shopper. There’s truly something here for everyone!

Kittery

Kittery is located at the southern most part of the state and is known for its beaches, art, naval museum, and shopping with over 100 outlet stores. Some of the oldest homes and churches in all of Maine are found here. The architecture alone is worth the visit.

While much of Maine tourist attractions appeal to nature lovers and seafood connoisseurs, artists (and those that love the arts), history buffs, and shoppers will find this state equally inviting.

No matter what season you decide to visit, Maine is waiting to welcome you and ensure that your stay is spectacular!
